Jordan: Dawn of Christianity Showcasing Jordan’s Christian Heritage at the Vatican City

In the heart of the Holy Land, where the echoes of prophets and saints continue to resonate, Jordan stands as a timeless sanctuary that witnessed the birth and growth of Christianity. This February 2025, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Jordan, in collaboration with the Vatican, proudly presents the groundbreaking exhibition, “Jordan: Dawn of Christianity” / “Giordania Alba Del Cristianesimo.”

This extraordinary event commemorates 30 years of diplomatic relations between Jordan and the Holy See, coinciding with the Vatican’s Holy Jubilee Year themed “Pilgrimage of Hope” and the 60th anniversary of Pope Paul VI’s historic visit to Jordan in 1964. Hosted at the Vatican for an entire month, the exhibition offers an immersive journey through 90 exquisite artifacts that narrate the story of Christianity from its very beginnings to the present day.

A Journey Through History and Faith

The exhibition invites visitors to explore five significant pilgrimage sites in Jordan that hold immense historical and spiritual value:

  • Tel Mar Elias: Discover the birthplace of Prophet Elijah.

  • Our Lady of the Mountain Church: A shrine commemorating Mother Mary.

  • Mount Nebo: The final resting place of Prophet Moses.

  • Machaerus: The site where John the Baptist was martyred.

  • The Baptism Site of Jesus Christ (Maghtas): The sacred waters where John the Baptist baptized Jesus, marking the birthplace of Christianity.

These sites, officially recognized by the Vatican, underscore Jordan’s pivotal role in the roots of Christianity and its enduring legacy as a land of faith and peace.

Preserving and Celebrating Heritage

The artifacts on display trace the evolution of Christianity from the baptism of Jesus Christ to the Byzantine era, through the rise of the Islamic era, and into the modern Hashemite era. Visitors will encounter intricate mosaics, ancient Christian symbols like the Ichthys, and other treasures that tell the story of how Christianity thrived in Jordan and contributed to art, architecture, and cultural preservation from the first century to today.

A Message of Unity and Peace

His Majesty King Abdullah II’s enduring message of interfaith harmony and shared values resonates throughout the exhibition. “Our country is home to a historic Christian community. All our citizens actively share in building our strong nation. Indeed, Christians have been part of Middle East societies for thousands of years and are vital to the future of our region,” His Majesty has said. This exhibition reflects Jordan’s commitment to peace, coexistence, and the preservation of its rich cultural and religious heritage.

Invitation to a Global Audience

Jordan: Dawn of Christianity is more than an exhibition; it is a celebration of unity, peace, and faith. It invites believers and seekers from around the world to rediscover the roots of Christianity and connect with the timeless heritage of Jordan. As part of the Vatican’s Holy Jubilee Year and its theme of “Pilgrimage of Hope,” this exhibition serves as a spiritual and cultural bridge, inspiring reflection and connection.
