The Baptism Site of Jesus Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recently hosted a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, symbolizing a message of peace and unity. Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Lina Annab emphasized that safeguarding this sacred site is both a national and moral responsibility, as it continues to welcome pilgrims from across the globe.
Highlighting Jordan’s integral role within the Holy Land, Annab stated:
“Jordan is a beacon of the message of peace and tolerance that Christianity brought to the world from this very land.”
She also announced plans for a significant exhibition to be held in the Vatican in February 2025. This event will showcase rare Christian artifacts from Jordan, offering profound evidence of the country’s role as a custodian of Christian heritage for over 2,000 years.
Annab also addressed the challenges facing the region, particularly the violations occurring in Jerusalem. She reaffirmed Jordan’s commitment to protecting the City of Peace under Hashemite Custodianship, which safeguards both Christian and Muslim holy sites. She called on global solidarity to preserve humanity’s shared heritage, stating:
“An attack on the Holy Land is an attack on the spiritual and historical legacy of all humanity.”
Archimandrite Athanasius Qaqish, Deputy Archbishop of Jordan for the Greek Orthodox Church and Head of the Council of Church Leaders, shared a message of love, sacrifice, and unity. He urged individuals to embody the values of peace, purity, and respect through actions that foster a dignified life for all members of society.
Speaking at the celebration, Qaqish remarked:
“This sacred site, which holds immense significance for Christians worldwide, serves as a cradle of Christianity. From here, the message of peace and love spread to the entire world.”
The lighting of the Christmas tree at the Baptism Site serves as a powerful reminder of Jordan’s enduring role as a symbol of harmony, tolerance, and spiritual heritage.
